Within the framework of the 27th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP 27), held in November 2022 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, the main leaders related to the cause shared the necessary actions to achieve the objectives.
Bearing in mind that we are all part of the force that can stop the damage that our planet is suffering thanks to the impact that we have caused for years, we want to highlight 3 tips given by leaders in the World Economic Forum, which we consider essential to reverse this damage and help its conservation.
Change is possible
Kristian Teleki, Director of Friends of Ocean Action at the World Economic Forum, shared the solutions that could make a big difference, not only for emissions but also for the ocean.
The good news is that the advice shared by Teleki lets us know that if we take action, there are solutions that can make a real difference.
According to Teleki, there are five actions that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% to bring us to the 1.5-degree target.
1. Reduce emissions from maritime transport
2. Implement nature-based solutions
3. Shifting diets to eat more low carbon-intensive food from the ocean
4. Employ offshore wind power (or offshore renewable energy)
5. Store carbon on the seabed
Engage with communities – and women
Kahea Pacheco, Co-Executive Director of the Women's Earth Alliance, is a global initiative that empowers women leaders to protect the Earth.
Pacheco, as a spokesperson for minority women, particularly indigenous women and women of color, exposes how women are more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Women are 80% of all climate refugees worldwide. They are 14 times more likely to die in a weather-related event than anyone else. And it is that many times it is women who are in charge of caring for children, caring for the elderly. They are often the last to be rescued.
Pacheco invites you to really engage with communities and start valuing community-based knowledge and traditional ecological knowledge on the same playing field that we value Western knowledge and science. In her speech, she invites you to stop having “net zero” as your goal and really focus on getting to a real zero.
Know your 'Why' - and your 'How'
Frans van Houten, former CEO of Philips, invites you to stop talking about what can be done, and take action. “Everyone talks about, for example, sustainability or improving healthcare, and we know why it matters, for the world and our future generations. What people don't talk about enough is how we're going to make a change. It is understandable why, but the action agenda to have a real impact really fast, either on health or on the planet, is not strong enough.
To achieve the global change that we all need so that future generations can enjoy a livable planet with sufficient resources, we have to be part of the solution.
You can be a leader, or spokesperson, or take action and bring about change in your community, country, and the world, you just have to take action and prepare. If your dream is to be part of the change, don't hesitate and enroll in a doctoral or post-doctoral program that takes you to the next level.
